On July 19th 2020 in Loculi (Sardinia) the Guinness World Record Commission’s judge certified that “Il Gigante del Cedrino”, is now the world largest pecorino ever produced in the world: 165 cm diameter, 60 cm high, 598,5 Kg weight, 12 months aged, this PDO tasty Italian cheese is incredible!

This surpassed the ten-year record of ‘Largest block of cheese – sheep’s milk’ hold by Ascoli Piceno which had 534 kg, 158 cm diameter and 29 height cm height. However the record’s technical tests were born in 2017, within the event “Primavera nel cuore della Sardegna” created by Nuoro’s Camera di Commercio. Therfore to realize the “Giant of the Cedrino” 4.500 liters of milk have been used by 50 shepherds from Loculi. All the procedures lasted four-hour, have been followed and recorded by the notary Alessio Sanna of Nuoro.

“To be the world largest Pecorino is a record-symbol for Sardinia that we sponsored from the beginning by supporting the initiative of the Municipality – says the president of Coldiretti Nuoro Olgastra Leonardo Salis – it has a particular value for us, given the role that the sheep farming represents not only from an economic but also social, cultural and identity point of view.”

PDO Certified

As stated before the world largest pecorino is also PDO certified, which stands for Protected Designation of Origin. It is the best known and used abbreviation when it comes to typical products, and is officially recognized and shared at European level. It counts more than 400 wines and 160 registered Italian products.

It distinguishes both food but also wines whose characteristics are linked to a specific geographic environment and its traditions (discover here the dictionary of PDO and PGI products). Morover the DOP seal is assigned only to food specialties produced and processed in specific areas and the products that receive the brand must comply with a specific production specification that describes the history, territory and processing of the product.

These products are characterized by specific conditions: the production of raw materials and their transformation up to the finished product must take place within the defined region of which the product bears the name; the quality or characteristics of the product must be traceable to the geographical environment of the place of origin, to examples of natural and human factors such as climate, soil quality and local technical knowledge.
